About

Guild Wars 2 is a ten-year-old MMO that has settled into one of the healthier live-service rhythms in the genre. ArenaNet ships a balance patch roughly every six weeks, and between those they run the larger feature and story updates that carry new zones, elite specs, and new story chapters.

The four-year expansion structure is the thing to understand about this game's roadmap. Rather than a linear stream of expansions, ArenaNet works on four parallel expansion projects and releases roughly one at a time. That means the next expansion is publicly named well in advance, and its content is revealed progressively over months before release. There is very little surprise about what is coming.

What that changes for tracking purposes: you rarely have to guess. The interesting question on this page is not "what is the next update" but "which of the four in-progress expansions is closest to shipping", and the answer is usually visible in the roadmap posts before any date is confirmed.

Balance patches are the other half. Because Guild Wars 2 is a skill-expression game with a ranked mode, a patch that adjusts weapon or elite-skill numbers can reshape the meta noticeably, and the community tends to test builds within hours of a patch dropping. If you play ranked, the patch notes are genuinely worth reading rather than skimming, because they tell you which of your existing builds are about to stop working.
