About

Planet Zoo is Frontier's zoo simulation, released in 2019 and built on the same simulation architecture as Planet Coaster. That shared codebase explains most of what is worth knowing about its update history, including the difference between what this game and Planet Coaster 2 receive.

Frontier maintains Planet Zoo and Planet Coaster as a pair, and the two diverged after Planet Coaster 2 launched in 2023. The original Planet Coaster is in maintenance mode receiving balance and stability work, and Planet Zoo is in the same position: still supported, still receiving updates, but no longer where the studio is putting its new feature work.

The practical consequence is that a date on this page is a smaller, more conservative update than the equivalent date on a Planet Coaster 2 profile. Content drops largely stopped, and what remains is habitat and species additions, guest and animal AI improvements, and ongoing fixes to the simulation.

The simulation underneath is genuinely deep, and that has a specific consequence for patching. Frontier's park and zoo sims have intricate guest and animal pathfinding, and bugs in that code are frequently discovered months after release because they only manifest under specific crowd or enclosure conditions. This means patches can look small and still matter a great deal to a well-built save.

Animal welfare is the other thing that makes this game distinctive, and it is a live systems question rather than a decoration. Animals have needs, social groups, breeding, and release-to-wild mechanics, and the balance between those systems is what most players are actually managing. Changes to any of it are worth reading the notes on.

If you are new to the genre, this is a game where the first twenty hours are mostly about learning the interface, and where most of the actual optimisation happens much later. A date mid-session will interrupt you at a point where you have almost no infrastructure and the update may change what you were planning.
